West Virginia Pepperoni Rolls

Douglas Weimer

The Pepperoni Rolls came out of the gate hot — back-to-back playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023 had this squad looking like a perennial contender, the kind of team that makes everyone else nervous in September. Then came the fall: a 5-17 record and a Sacko bracket finish in 2025. The cruel irony is that the Rolls are not short on star power — Julio Rodriguez and Paul Skenes represent the kind of foundational pieces most managers would tear their team down for, a generational bat paired with one of the most electric arms in the game. On paper, this should be a dangerous roster. Two consecutive bottom-three finishes suggest the problem is not the stars — it is everything around them. The talent is there to dominate this league. The execution has not been.

Strengths

The early years of this franchise were genuinely well-constructed — back-to-back playoff appearances in the league's first two seasons required real draft and waiver savvy, and Douglas showed he could build a competitive team from scratch. When Julio Rodriguez is healthy and producing at his ceiling, the Pepperoni Rolls have a legitimate offensive weapon who can carry a lineup through tough stretches. Most importantly, the roster is anchored by Paul Skenes, the best pitcher baseball has seen in a generation— a genuine ace whose scoring potential provides a ceiling few managers in the league can match on the mound.

Weaknesses

The plummet from back-to-back playoffs to a 5-17 Saccko finish in 2025 tells a familiar story: loyalty to aging rosters that stopped earning it. The franchise has treated 'hold' as a default setting rather than a decision, watching players decline on the bench instead of cutting bait. Paul Skenes and Julio Rodriguez offer elite upside, but when they go cold, the lineup behind them offers thoughts and prayers. The pitching staff has a rotation in the same way a greasy spoon has a menu—technically true, but after the first two options the remaining feels like ordering at your own risk. Year after year, management has surrounded genuine difference-makers with a supporting cast that could not support a card table.
